The Power of Adopting a Strengths-Based Approach

This course is designed to deepen your understanding of a strengths-based approach and gain tangible strategies you can implement in your professional and personal relationships.

Build on strengths for brighter futures

Have you ever noticed that your brain has a natural tendency to give weight to negative experiences or interactions more than positive ones? Psychologists refer to this as negativity bias, and it causes people to focus on one bad thing in a mountain of good things.

A strengths-based approach focuses on abilities, knowledge, and capacities rather than things that are lacking. The approach recognizes that children and families are resilient and are capable of growth, learning, and change.

We created our online course, A Strengths-Based Approach, to help you understand what the approach is and provide strategies to support growth in your practice with individuals and families.

A strengths-based approach highlights what’s strong rather than what’s wrong.

In this course, you will be challenged to think about the beliefs you bring into your practice and how the language you use reflects those beliefs.

Imagine how your relationships can change when you learn how to support others to grow by identifying and building upon their strengths.

Address Strengths and Concerns

The course will teach you how to identify and acknowledge someones strengths AND their concerns in a strengths-based way to support healthy behaviors.

Cultural Humility

The course empasizes the importance of understanding and valuing an individual’s or a family’s culture as a source of strength.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY

“I liked being able to look at scenarios and document how I would respond in those situations. I think it’s helpful to practice these scenarios outside of home visits.

“It really helped me understand the power of communicating with positivity. I am someone who truly “tells it how it is,” but this series taught me that sometimes, people do not take in the information that way. There are better terms or even my own demeanor that could be changed to express an opinion.”

“The thing I enjoyed most about this course was the Power of Words section- it really made me think about how I can make small changes to ensure that the language I’m using is strength-based.”
