In-State/Province Trainer Mentoring

Great Kids, Inc. has worked with emerging and existing home visiting programs and state systems in the United States and Canada to enhance the development of exceptional service systems for new parents and their children.

How does Great Kids, Inc. train new trainers?

Congruent with our philosophy of supporting parents by providing strength-based, individually focused home visiting support, so do we approach training new trainers. Rather than providing a one-time, large scale "train the trainers" classroom type training, Great Kids, Inc. offers trainees a multi-step, individualized, hands-on "Trainer Mentoring" process.

Phase 1: Mentor Training

The new trainee is paired with one of Great Kids, Inc.'s senior trainers who will serve as their Mentor through the first phase of the process. During phase one, the mentor prepares for and conducts a full core (Home Visiting or Parent Survey) training while the trainee observes and participates in the daily training preparation. During this training, the Mentor supports the trainee by sharing information with them about adult learning and specific training techniques and modeling effective training behaviors. The trainee also works with the Mentor before, during and after each training day to continually refine the week's training to meet the needs of the particular training group.

Phase 2: Resource Training

The second part of the Mentoring process is called Resource Training. During Resource Trainings, the trainee and the mentor actually switch places. The trainee prepares for and provides the core training, while the Mentor observes and supports the process. Each Trainee must demonstrate effective training skills during two separate Resource Trainings in order to complete their certification.

The Great Kids, Inc. Trainer Mentoring process to certify in-state/province core trainers is unique. It provides individualized mentoring leading to GKI certification for trainer candidates selected by their state/province, allowing high quality training for in-state/province home visiting programs. Quality staff training has been noted to enhance the development of exceptional service systems for new parents and their children.
