Child Abuse Prevention
Great Kids, Inc. has found that deficit based models focusing primarily on
the prevention of child abuse and neglect, have not been effective for the
programs, their staff, or the families they serve. By utilizing a strength-based
philosophy that focuses on positive outcomes for children in the areas of
growth and development, parent child interaction, and family functioning,
programs will, indeed, prevent child abuse and neglect.
Child abuse prevention is simply one of the many great results programs find
when they provide strength-based, family centered support to new parents.
In order to build a strong and stable future for our country, GKI's vision
is that every child would grow up in a nurturing, enriched environment that
includes the following:
- An ongoing nurturing parent-child relationship, fostering a strong attachment.
- Developmentally appropriate experiences tailored to the child's interests
and needs that nurture cognitive development, resilience, and social
competence.
- Preparation for school readiness and success
- Established community connectedness and social supports
A highly effective means for securing this future
for our children is by providing quality home visiting for expectant
and new parents.
Great Kids, Inc.'s desire is that policy makers, international leaders and
private citizens would all be invested in working toward establishing policies
that communicate the value of families and children, providing protection
for current and future generations.
This is supported by GKI providing the training and technical assistance/support
that home visitation programs need in order to effectively ensure that all
children in their community receive the opportunity to grow up in a nurturing,
stimulating environment providing them the opportunity to reach their innate
potential.
